Surrogate Maternity InsuranceMaternity coverage written specifically for gestational surrogacy, with billing managed from start to delivery.
Intended parents are matched with a gestational surrogate; her health insurance status determines what type of insurance is used. The two most common outcomes are using the surrogate’s existing health insurance, or a surrogacy-specific plan through Universal Family Insurance (UFI), backed by a Lloyd’s of London syndicate. If existing coverage is selected, intended parents also purchase a backup plan that provides coverage in the event of a denial by the primary insurance. Pregnancy costs are covered by insurance (intended parents incur shared costs such as deductibles and co-payments). If you are using the UFI plan, all billing and payments are managed. Coverage continues once the surrogate is admitted to the hospital to deliver, and typically covers pregnancy-related care she needs after delivery.

This policy is in effect while the egg donor and/or recipient (gestational surrogate) is undergoing IVF cycle treatment — before the maternity policy is in effect. It covers situations where the donor or recipient has an adverse reaction to IVF procedures or medications, managing the risk of cycle-related complications and resulting medical expenses. Complications may include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), ovarian bleeding, loss of ovaries, and allergic reaction to medications.

Accidental Death InsuranceLife-style coverage if serious pregnancy complications take the life of the gestational surrogate.
This policy works similarly to a life insurance policy. It provides coverage in the very unlikely event that serious pregnancy complications take the life of the gestational surrogate, and satisfies the intended parents’ contractual obligation to secure insurance in the event of the surrogate’s death during pregnancy. Benefits may be paid to the surrogate’s named beneficiaries and/or to the intended parents.

Local MonitoringCoordination of bloodwork and ultrasounds near the donor or gestational carrier — so cycles stay viable and costs stay contained.
Local monitoring is the term used in the surrogacy industry for monitoring gestational surrogates and donors at medical providers located at an inconvenient distance from the IVF provider. It typically involves several appointments for blood work and ultrasounds either leading up to a transfer (for a donor) or following transfer (for a gestational surrogate), until certification of pregnancy, when the patient is released to her OB-GYN. Appointments cannot be missed or a cycle is no longer viable. Protocols, geography, and pricing vary widely. We identify competent nearby providers, keep appointments on calendar, and contain costs by finding alternatives, steering to network providers, or negotiating high fees.
